### What the monthly change log is for

The pipeline behind this site runs on the first of each month. It fetches from Wikidata, OpenStreetMap and Wikipedia, resolves organizations across those sources, upserts into the master database, and exports JSON into the site repository. Every upsert that alters an existing value writes a row to a change table first. Those rows become the pages under /changes/, one permanent page per month. Why keep them A dataset that silently corrects itself is impossible to audit. If a venue's capacity was 45,500 last month and is 42,500 today, three very different things could have happened: the venue was reconfigured, a source corrected an error, or the pipeline started parsing a different field. Only the first is a fact about the world. Keeping the change rows makes that distinguishable. Each one records the table, the field, the old value, the new value and the timestamp. Read in sequence, they show whether a field is stable, or whether it flips back and forth every time an upstream editor changes their mind. What it does not do The change log records the fact of the change, not the reasoning. A row telling you that a status went from active to closed does not tell you why, and neither does the pipeline know. For that you follow the source URL on the venue page. It also only covers changes since the pipeline started tracking. A venue that was renamed in 2011 has that in its name history, not in the change log; the change log is about what the dataset believed, not about what happened in the world. Corrections are made upstream When something here is wrong, the correction goes into the master database through a small command line tool that writes both the corrected value and a change row with a manual confidence level. Then the export and publish stages re-run. Nothing is ever edited in the published JSON or in the search mirror, for a boring reason: the next monthly export would overwrite it, and the correction would vanish without a trace. The only durable place to fix a fact is the place the export is generated from. Empty months If a month changes nothing, no page is published for it. A page saying "nothing changed" is not useful, and a permanent URL with no content is worse than no URL. The months that exist are the months where something moved.

### Reading the naming-rights data without getting it wrong

Naming-rights numbers travel well. A figure quoted once in a press release turns up in a dozen articles, then in a chart, then in a slide, long after anyone can say what it measured. This post is about what the sponsorship fields on this site do and do not claim. Deal value is what a publisher printed The dealvalue field is only populated when a source states a figure, and the source URL is stored beside it. Most deals have no published figure at all, and a blank here means exactly that: not published. It does not mean zero, and it does not mean small. Where a figure exists, three caveats apply: 1. It is usually the total, not annual. Where a source is ambiguous, the value is stored as printed and the term in years is stored separately, so you can divide if you want an annual figure rather than inheriting someone else's division. 2. It is nominal, not inflation adjusted. A deal signed in 1998 and a deal signed in 2024 are not comparable without adjusting, and this dataset does not adjust them for you. 3. The USD figure is converted at the start-year average rate from a committed exchange rate file, not a live API. That means a rebuild never silently changes a historic figure, which in turn means two exports of the same deal always agree. A name change is not always a sponsorship change The name history table counts every recorded name, and the name-change count in the table column is that list minus one. Some of those changes have nothing to do with sponsors: - a sponsor renews under a new corporate identity after a merger - a venue reverts to its original, unsponsored name when a deal lapses - an operator rebrands the building without any money changing hands So a high name-change count is a signal about instability of identity, not about sponsorship revenue. Cross-check against the sponsor column before reading anything into it. Dates are frequently year-only Sources almost never give the day a naming deal started. Where only a year is known, the date is stored as the first of January of that year with a year-precision flag. The timelines on venue pages draw those as whole years, which is why several of them line up suspiciously neatly on January boundaries. That is the honest rendering of a year-precision fact, not a coincidence. What is out of scope Jersey patches, kit deals and competition title sponsorships are not in this dataset, however related they look. It covers sponsorship of the venue: naming rights first, then founding-partner and pouring-rights deals where a public source exists. Anything else would need a different source base and a different set of caveats.

### Owner, operator, tenant: three different organizations

Ask who owns a stadium and you will usually get one name back. Ask again and you may get a different one, equally confidently. Both answers are often right, because the question is underspecified. Take a typical large North American arena. A city or county holds the title to the land and the building. A management group holds a long-term operating agreement and runs everything from event booking to concessions. A club plays there under a lease and sells the naming rights, or does not, because the authority kept them. Three organizations, three different relationships, three different end dates. What this dataset does instead Ownership is stored as a list of dated roles rather than a field on the venue: - owner, operator and tenant are separate role types - each role row has a start date, an end date and a current flag - a venue can have several current owners and several current operators at once - every role row carries the URL it was derived from and a confidence level That means a joint public and private ownership is representable without picking a winner, and a venue that changed operators in 2019 keeps both the old and the new row. Why the table still shows one owner column The table on this site has an Owner column and an Ownership column, and both are derived conveniences, not the underlying truth. The owner column joins the names of current owners with a comma. The ownership column reduces the set of current owners to one of four words: - public if every current owner is a public authority - team if the owner is the club itself - private if the owner is a company - mixed if more than one kind of owner is current Those derived values exist so the table can be filtered and sorted quickly from a compact index. Whenever they matter, follow the link to the venue page, where the full role rows with dates and sources are laid out. The failure mode this avoids The common shortcut, one owner string per venue, has a specific and predictable failure: it records whichever organization the most recent article happened to mention. In practice that is usually the operator, because the operator is the one issuing press releases. A dataset built that way will tell you that a large management company owns dozens of publicly owned arenas. Keeping the roles apart costs one extra table and a slightly more complex export. It is the difference between a dataset you can use for an ownership question and one you cannot.
